Sermon for the Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity, 2024

By this battle, fought in Nain—fought before your eyes of faith this day, the Lord demonstrates His disposition toward you, Beloved, for the valiant One, who fought for them, also fights for us. Filled with compassion for your sorry state, the one and only-begotten Son of God, very God of very God, for us—for mankind—and for our salvation came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man. He came to fight against Death for you by taking your death upon Himself and defeating it with His own death. The Virgin’s Son raised the widow’s son; then, bearing the sins of the world, He went to the Cross to die for them so that the young man and his mother, the crowds and you, indeed everyone who believes in Him, though they die, yet shall they live. Almighty God took on flesh—our flesh—to pay for our sins, die the death we deserve, and win—for us—the victory over sin and Death.
