Sermon for The Second Sunday after Trinity, 2024

It's said that the Gospel in a nutshell is John 3:16: God so loved the world... and so forth. Or John 1: Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Or even the Words of Institution. And these are all, indeed, great and excellent summaries of the Gospel. So, also is this, Beloved, for if you want the Gospel itself—in its fullness, in a nutshell—consider the invitation: come, for all things are now ready. This is not just about some dinner party; it's about the fact that Christ has done it all: He has given His all and not held anything back in order to prepare this Feast. For this Feast was prepared at great, immense, personal cost to Him. He, who is the only-begotten Son of God, indeed, God of God, very God of very God, came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary; He was made man and was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered, died, and was buried. And on the third day, He arose from the dead. All this He did, in order that the banquet of salvation might be prepared for you; that He might also say, "This is My body; this is My blood." The Body that was crucified, the Blood that was shed: if it were not for His crucifixion and the shedding of His Blood, there would be no Sacrament; if it were not for His incarnation and His humiliation, there would be no Supper; if it were not for His abject poverty, there would be no rich Feast for you today. He has done it all; He—He alone—has made all things ready.
