Sermon for the Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity, 2024

Jesus is the sum and fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” It’s not incidental that Jesus uses the word hang here because that is precisely what He, the sum and fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets, does: He hangs upon the Cross. He hangs upon the Cross, bearing the punishment we deserve for our lack of obedience to the Law and the Prophets; He hangs as the perfect obedience to those two Commandments: in perfect love for His heavenly Father, Jesus hangs upon the Cross, obediently bearing our sins according to His Father’s will; in perfect love for you—His neighbor—He dies the death your sins deserve, keeping the commandments which you, in your sin, could not keep. He hangs on the Cross for you: He hangs in perfect obedience and in perfect love.
