These things were written that you may believe. That little word, you, dearly Beloved, that’s you. Today, nearly two thousand years after the Evangelist was inspired to pen these words, these words refer to you. In the blessed Sacrament of the Altar, you join Thomas in inspecting the Lord’s wounds, for there, in a very real sense, you touch Jesus and, once again, begin to recognize that He forever bears those wounds in His hands and side for a reason: His wounds bespeak you forgiven; they announce to the Father that satisfaction for your sins has been made. Your sin isn’t trivial, and your deformity of the heart is not inconsequential; they’re real, as real as His wounds. He doesn’t shrug at your sin and say, “No big deal.” With the marks in His hands and His side, He says, “Your sin is paid for; it is forgiven. I have redeemed you.”
