Sermon for Oculi, 2024

“Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You! What a wonderful mother you had who raised such a fine boy into a wonderful man. How great Thou art.” It didn’t impress Him… at all, so He says, “More than that, blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it.” That will keep this woman safe, and this man—out of whom the devil was cast—safe, and that is what will keep you safe: to hear again and anew, and again and again the Word of God, that is to say, that God has taken on flesh and has overcome the strong man and has risen from the dead the Third Day. In this message, in this Gospel, is power for everlasting salvation; it is this Word—alone—that keeps you safe, not your own preparations and works and deeds and willpower or anything in you. You couldn’t do it; you were a helpless slave of the devil, freed solely by the grace of Christ. Stay, therefore, with Him: He who, alone, is your Saviour.
